In the context of the Rohingya crisis, UN Secretary General Antonio Gutters has urged the Myanmar government to give citizenship or legality to the Rohingya Muslims. He expressed deep fears of reaching 1.25 thousand people in Bangladesh in the new conflict beginning August 25.
Gutters said that it is important for Myanmar to immediately provide Muslim citizenship or legal validity. Through which they can live independently, find livelihood and take education.
On Monday, he said, I condemned the recent attack by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army. But we now get regular reports that the army is arbitrarily attacking in Myanmar. This will increase the chances of leaning into fundamentalism among them.
Gutters said that for several decades the Rohingya Muslims have been suffering from discrimination, despair and extreme poverty in Myanmar and they face ethnic cleansing. 1 lakh 25 thousand people have suffered in horrors and have taken shelter in Bangladesh and many of them have died while fleeing conflict. He urged Myanmar military and civil authorities to stop this violence. Washington Post
